Stopping smoking
Stopping smoking is one of the most positive changes you can make for your health. It is never too late to stop. Your body begins to recover after you stop smoking. Over time, stopping smoking can improve your breathing, circulation, energy levels and fitness. It can also make it easier to stay active and take part in everyday activities.
Stopping smoking reduces your risk of serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, lung disease and cancer.
Smoking can also affect musculoskeletal health. It can reduce blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues, which may affect healing and recovery from some injuries. Stopping smoking can support your recovery and improve your overall health. It can also complement being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight and looking after your wellbeing.
Quitting smoking can be difficult because nicotine is addictive. Support is available. Options can include:
- behavioural support
- nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches, gum and sprays
- prescribed treatments, where appropriate
- specialist stop smoking services.
Your MSK physiotherapy team can provide healthy lifestyle advice and direct you towards further support when needed.
