Mental health and wellbeing

Looking after your mental wellbeing is an important part of looking after your overall health.

It is normal to have times when you feel stressed, anxious or low, particularly when dealing with pain, injury or changes to your health. Looking after your mental wellbeing can help you cope with difficult times, improve sleep and support your physical health.

There are simple things you can try to support your wellbeing. For example:

  • being physically active
  • staying connected with friends, family or other people
  • making time for activities you enjoy
  • trying mindfulness, relaxation or breathing exercises
  • breaking problems into smaller, more manageable steps.

Physical activity can help improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep and increase energy. For more information, read our Physical activity information.

If you are struggling with your mental health, you do not have to manage it alone. Talking to someone you trust can help.

The NHS Every Mind Matters website provides practical advice and tools, including a free Mind Plan to help with stress, anxiety, low mood and sleep.

If your mental health is affecting your everyday life, speak to your GP or access NHS support.
